The Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall Of Fame, (BARHOF), has launched a new way to experience the historical audio held in our archives. Using an open digital collections archive called DIVA, built by the Academic Technology office at San Francisco State University, we’ll be able to create an endless number of “Collections”, built around any number of themes.

Why use DIVA and not our existing website? Good question. BayAreaRadio.org will continue to be the historical heart of BARHOF, with a growing library of information about BARHOF inductees, Bay Area radio stations past and present, and much more. The website is and will remain largely text-based, while DIVA offers exciting new ways of allowing visitors to experience digital media (audio, video, images, etc.) in ways that our legacy website was never designed to support. We will, of course, use each platform to support the other.

We’re just getting started at DIVA. The first collection to go “Live” holds several dozen commercials heard on Bay Area radio stations. We’ll soon be posting all known episodes of Sheila Rene Backstage, a “rock interview” show produced in the early 1980s by pioneering rock journalist Sheila Rene in San Jose.

DIVA will not only offer interesting ways for the public to access our content. It works quite well as a Digital Asset Management system as well. As we upload files and add metadata and research information, we’ll be building a resource that can be used by researchers both within and outside CHRS.
