HONORING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
By Curator Maureen Bourbin
Women’s History Month began in Sonoma, California in 1978 to coincide with International Woman’s Day on March 8. The movement grew, and in 1987, the United States Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month.
CHRS honors and celebrates Women’s History Month with our exhibition Women in Radio and Other Technology in the Great Room. The exhibit highlights a few of many women who have made valuable contributions to the industry. Local notables from early radio and technology include Sybil Herrold (San Jose), Kathleen Parkin (San Rafael), and also includes Nora Stanton Blatch, the first female junior member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and movie star Hedy Lamarr who held a patent for a jam resistant communication channel for the United States military during WWII. The story of the Radium Girls who applied luminescent powder to radio dials is recounted as well. Objects and publications complement the exhibit.
