“Radio Day ON The Bay 2021 – LIVE! Aboard The USS Hornet is TOMORROW!

We will be holding Radio Day on the Hornet where there is plenty of room to spread out. It will be on the enormous hanger deck. It’s covered but has huge doors that open for plenty of fresh air. It will be a holiday themed program and all of our favorites are back.

TICKETS AT THE SHIP: No pre sales.  NOTE: Usually when CHRS hosts Radio Day, we charge a $10 entrance donation. This time, the Hornet’s usual entrance fees apply. They are: $20 for Adults – $15 for seniors, students or veterans – $10 for Juniors – And children under 6 are Free. Not only are these admissions to the Radio Day events, you are also entitled to enjoy the gigantic, historic USS Hornet including tours of the ship. The Hornet requires guests to wear masks on the ship.

THE PROGRAM BEGINS: With a swing tune and trumpet fanfare by Horns A Plenty featuring Russ Button. The Bay Area Broadcast Legends are also joining us for Radio Day! The Legends will present a vintage radio newscast from 1969. That was the year the the USS Hornet plucked Apollo 11 and 12 out of the ocean, after successful Moon landings. Our newscasters are Broadcast Legends Peter Cleaveland, BARHOF Class of 2016 & Joe Starkey, BARHOF Class of 2014.  Just added: DJ Mole, spinning 78s!

This story has an ominous beginning and may not seem appropriate for the Holiday season. But good will prevail. DON SHERWOOD AWARD PRESENTED: Len Shapiro, Exec. Director of the Bay Area Radio Museum, will present this year’s Sherwood Award for the most popular Bay Area radio personality. And CHRS Chairman Mike Adams will present the CHRS Volunteer of the Year Award.

MORE DETAILS: We will feature our Donation Fullment Center where for a donation to CHRS, you will receive a beautiful, restored vintage radio. Most of these antiques are equipped to play music from your phone or other music players. These sets are perfect holiday gifts. Take a few home for family and friends.

OK, Save the date… December 18th… On the USS Hornet, 707 West Hornet Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. How cool is that? The hanger deck of the USS Hornet where Radio Day activities are planned is ADA accessible. There is also an ADA restroom and a food concession in the Radio Day area. Stay tuned and watch this space for more details. This event will be lots of fun. Plan to be there.

For Radio Day The Hornet will be including a tour of the ship’s Command and Control Center which is usually an extra charge. What a great experience and a great value.
