SAUSALITO, CA – Bay City News is expanding beyond the written word to bring local news and arts reporting to Radio Sausalito. The partnership, a first of its kind in the region, brings together two different but independent community media voices. Radio Sausalito has for 20 years been the only radio station serving Southern Marin with big band, jazz, and local information. Bay City News (BCN), which started in 1979 to serve the greater Bay Area with 24/7 news, has been expanding in recent years to provide public service journalism at the free LocalNewsMatters.org website. Beginning this week, two reporters from Bay City News will debut new weekly shows on Radio Sausalito.

“We are committed to filling coverage gaps with fact-based, useful news on multiple platforms,” said Katherine Ann Rowlands, owner and publisher of Bay City News. “This is an exciting project that allows us to experiment with a new format to reach new audiences.”

The first show, “Local News Matters,” is a weekly roundup of reporting by independent journalists featuring stories affecting Southern Marin and the greater Bay Area. The show is hosted by Ruth Dusseault, an investigative reporter and multimedia journalist focused on environment and energy. Her position is supported by the California Local News Fellowship, a statewide initiative hosted by UC Berkeley aimed at providing underserved communities with local news. Before attending UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism (‘23), she was an assistant professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Architecture where she taught digital storytelling and reported on the engineered
systems that undergird modern life.

The second show, “Bay City Beat” is hosted by Leslie Katz and showcases a unique listing of weekend arts and cultural events around Marin County and the Bay Area. Leslie has been covering the diverse Bay Area arts scene since 1988, when she began compiling Bay City News’ Leisure Log entertainment calendar. She also worked as a news reporter and editor at BCN before serving as arts editor at ANG Newspapers (now Bay Area News Group) and the San Francisco Examiner from 2001-2021. Her weekly show will help listeners discover and learn about new and intriguing things happening in the area.

“I wanted to do something to move the needle for local news here in Marin County for several years.” said Jonathan Westerling, founder & president of Radio Sausalito. “When I heard about Bay City News’ efforts to foster nonprofit journalism in the area, I immediately reached out and suggested that we team up. The two shows launching on our station in the coming days are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of keeping credible, reliable, local reporting alive. I hope others will join in listening to, and supporting this kind of journalism on the radio and beyond.”

“Bay City Beat” airs weekly on Fridays at 8am, noon, and 5pm beginning September 20th. “Local News Matters” can be heard every week on Mondays at 8am, noon, and 5pm beginning September 23rd.
