SUMMARY:September Speaking Event
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row column_spacing=”50″ el_class=”wpex-mt-50″][vc_column width=”1/2″]Software-Defined Radio: Inside SDR Receivers and Technology[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”40px”]\nPresented by John Staples\nSaturday\, September 12\, 2026 | 1:30-2:30 PM- Meet and greet starts at 1:00 PM\nCalifornia Historical Radio Society – Radio Central \nJoin the California Historical Radio Society for an in-depth technical presentation on Software-Defined Radio (SDR)with John Staples. \nSoftware-defined radio represents a fundamental shift in how radio signals can be received\, processed\, and analyzed\, replacing many functions traditionally performed by dedicated analog hardware with flexible digital processing. \nIn this technical presentation\, John will take us inside the circuitry and technology that make SDR receivers work. He will analyze receiver circuits\, explore the mathematics behind their operation\, and demonstrate how signals move from the antenna through the receiver and into the digital domain. \nThe program will include live demonstrations of at least four different SDR hardware and software configurations\, using real RF signals received through CHRS’s antenna system. Attendees will have an opportunity to see and compare different approaches to software-defined radio in real time. \nTopics will include: \n\nSDR receiver architecture and signal flow\nThe circuitry behind SDR receivers\nAnalog-to-digital conversion and digital signal processing\nThe mathematics underlying SDR operation\nSDR hardware and software configurations\nLive reception and analysis of radio signals\nAdvantages\, limitations\, and capabilities of software-defined receivers\n\nThis presentation is designed for a technically oriented audience and will go beyond a basic introduction to SDR. Radio amateurs\, engineers\, electronics enthusiasts\, experimenters\, and anyone interested in understanding how modern radio receivers actually work are especially encouraged to attend. \n  \nJohn Staples:  W6BM\, received his first phone and extra class licenses in 1958. He is a semi-retired scientist who worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Lab. \n\n\n\n\n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Register[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”40px”]Tickets are $10 for non-members and free for members. SUMMARY:Sounds Bites- Radio Kits
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nGet ready to tune in and turn on your curiosity! In this month’s Sound Bites\, participants will build their very own working radio. \nWith guidance from our instructors\, kids will explore the basics of how radios work while assembling a hands-on kit they can take home. Along the way\, they’ll discover how invisible radio waves carry sound through the air and power the technology we use every day. \nThis is a guided\, start-to-finish activity\, perfect for curious minds who love to build\, tinker\, and learn by doing. By the end of the session\, each participant will have a functioning radio—and a deeper understanding of the science behind it. \nRecommended for ages 8 and up. \nA suggested donation of $20 helps cover the cost of materials. \nPlease note: Advance registration is required\, as kits are limited. Participants must arrive promptly at 10:00 AM and attend with a grown-up\, who should plan to stay and participate throughout the activity. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Sound Bites- Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nWhat’s inside?  Radio Vs. iPhone \nIn May’s Sound Bites\, kids will become technology detectives as they explore what’s inside the devices we use to communicate. Participants will get a close look at a dissected vintage radio and a dissected iPhone\, comparing the parts and pieces that make each one work. \nThrough guided discussion and hands-on observation\, kids will learn how radios from the past used components like tubes\, coils\, and speakers to receive sound from the air\, while modern smartphones use tiny microchips\, circuit boards\, and digital technology to do the same things. \nThis fun activity helps kids see how communication technology has evolved over time while discovering the surprising similarities between old and new inventions. Designed for curious minds ages 5–15\, this Sound Bites event is perfect for anyone who wonders what’s inside and to learn how the technologies work! \nSound Bites is designed for kids and their grown-ups to enjoy together.  Please plan to stay and participate alongside your child during the event!

SUMMARY:CHRS May Guest Speakers Event - Radio Engineers
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row column_spacing=”50″][vc_column]"FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GLASS"... RADIO ENGINEERS SPEAK  \n\n\n[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”10px”]CHRS hosted an engineering panel discussion way back in our KRE days. Now it’s time again to feature the stories from the people we never hear on the air. But without them there would be nothing on the air. So\, we will present\, “From The Other Side Of The Glass” featuring four engineers from your favorite Bay Area radio stations. Three are members of the Bay Area Radio Hall Of Fame. They are full of stories about our favorite stations and favorite on air personalities. We present our distinguished panel and some of the stations where they worked: \nCome meet these important members of the radio broadcasting community and get the ‘goods’ from the guys who were there… in the days when sometimes unusual things happened during live broadcasts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_section][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″ offset=”vc_col-md-3″]Terry Lloyd[vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”wpex-text-3″ text_transform=”uppercase” letter_spacing=”wider” font_size=”sm” bottom_margin=”15px”]Career Started in 1956[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”20px”]KSFO – KLOK – KEEN[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ offset=”vc_col-md-3″]Chuck Waltman[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”15px” el_class=”wpex-text-3″ text_transform=”uppercase” letter_spacing=”wider” font_size=”sm”]BARHOF Class of 2020\nCareer Started in 1968[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”20px”]KMEL – KIOI – KNEW – KSFO – KYA – KSOL – KABL[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ offset=”vc_col-md-3″]Dan Ethen[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”15px” el_class=”wpex-text-3″ text_transform=”uppercase” letter_spacing=”wider” font_size=”sm”]BARHOF Class of 2020\nCareer Started in 1960[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”20px”]KLOK – KPFA – KFRC – KNBR – KSRO[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ offset=”vc_col-md-3″]Bill Ruck[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”15px” el_class=”wpex-text-3″ text_transform=”uppercase” letter_spacing=”wider” font_size=”sm”]BARHOF Class of 2014\nCareer Started in 1972[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”20px”]KUSF – KJAZ – KALW – KNBR – KFOG – KSAN – KTCT[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nSchedule\n\n3 PM – Arrival\, Meet & Greet & Seating\n3:30 PM – Panel Discussion Begins\n5 PM – Audience Questions\n\n[/vc_column_text]Register[vc_column_text css=”” bottom_margin=”40px”]Tickets are $10 for non-members and free for members. SUMMARY:Ask Dr. Hip
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\n\n \nJoin us at CHRS for a conversation with Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld\, better known to generations of Bay Area listeners as Dr. Hip of KSAN-FM. \nIn the late 1960s and 1970s\, Dr. Hip became a defining voice of San Francisco’s underground radio scene\, offering candid\, controversial\, and often provocative advice on topics rarely discussed openly on the air—health\, sex\, drugs\, and personal freedom. His broadcasts on KSAN challenged social norms and reflected the era’s spirit of curiosity\, experimentation\, and change. \nA practicing psychiatrist specializing in psychopharmacology\, Dr. Schoenfeld’s professional work focuses on the study\, diagnosis\, and treatment of substance use\, abuse\, and addiction. His unique blend of medical expertise and countercultural sensibility made him a trusted—and sometimes notorious—source of information during a transformative moment in media and social history. \nFrom 1967–1973 and again in 1978–1979\, he also wrote Hip Pocrates\, a nationally syndicated newspaper column that answered readers’ questions about sexuality and psychoactive drugs with the same frankness that defined his radio presence. \nThis special event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from a figure who helped shape free-form radio and the cultural conversation of a generation. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp
