SUMMARY:Women in Broadcasting Event- "He Said\, She Said: Reality Check"
DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame commemorates Women’s History Month with our second annual women’s program titled\, “He Said\, She Said: Reality Check.” This year’s event will be held Saturday\, March 15th at 11am at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant at Jack London Square in Oakland.\n\n\nHow have women changed the face of broadcasting? How have they navigated a male dominated field in which they had little power and influence and few\, if any\, advocates.  How have women elevated their own progress in radio and TV? Which visionary managers championed women in those early years? And what are the experiences and challenges that women broadcasters face today?\n\n\nOur panel includes Marcia Brandwynne\, who has the distinction of being the first woman to anchor a local TV prime time newscast at KTVU Channel 2 in 1972. Marcia will be joined by decades-long ABC President and General Manager of KGO Radio Newstalk 810\, Mickey Luckoff and current top-rated broadcaster\, martial artist and cancer survivor Freska (Griarte) of KOIT and KBLX. Our host for the program is longtime TV and radio weather forecaster Roberta Gonzales of KTVU Fox 2 and formerly of KPIX-TV (Channel  5) and KCBS Radio.\n\n\nJoin us Saturday\, March 15th for heavy hors d’oeuvres and no-host bar at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant at Jack London Square in Oakland. Mingling and food service begin at 11am. The one-hour program starts at 12pm. Underground parking is available at Jack London Square. The ferry dock is a short walk.\n\n\n\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:David Louie Speaking Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2152 Central Ave. on May 16\, from 6-8 to hear from business and tech reporter David Louie. \nTV reporters get at most a couple of minutes to tell a news story\, but for every one of them\, there are back stories — what happened behind the scenes that doesn’t get told. David’s going to share some of the memorable moments and anecdotes from his 50-plus years on Bay Area TV that span the 1970’s through the early 2020’s. \nYou probably know David from his decades on Bay Area TV. He joined the Channel 7 “News Scene” team back in 1972 during the Van Amburg\, Jerry Jensen\, and Pete Giddings era. He ended up retiring from the same station just over 50 years later\, a feat few can claim. Over those years\, he covered an estimated 12\,000 stories and worked under nine general managers and seven news directors. He has both received and given out Emmy Awards\, and he’s a member of the Television Academy’s Silver and Gold circles. \nDoors open at 6:00 PM.  We will have hors d’oeuvres at 6\, the talk will begin at 6:30 moderated by award winning journalist Rosie Lee Allen\, followed by audience Q&A. \n  \n  \n\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon with Russ Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Join Russ Johnson\, at Radio Central\, Saturday\, June 21 at 2:30 as he tells stories about how listening to the squeals of distant radio signals and talking to the world as a 13 year old ham radio operator inspired 25 years as  radio and TV broadcaster\, including KRON and KABL\, and a second career\, traveling the world as a filmmaker\, writer and photographer. He will be playing audio and video reliving both worlds\, including the wacky world of an all night DJ\, groupies and all\, covering a coup d’etat in Fiji for NPR\, joining the Royal Family of Ubud\, Bali for the wedding of a prince\, and nerding out with Arthur C. Clarke in Sri Lanka as he redesigns the surface of Mars. \nHow Radio Inspired My Wanderlust \nWhen Russ Johnson first encountered a mysterious green blob on the map called Borneo as a ham radio operator at age 13\, little did he know that Radio would inspire a career in broadcasting and take him to some sixty countries as a writer\, photographer\, and filmmaker. Russ will share his radio and travel adventures through stories\, recordings and pictures. \nAs a child\, Russ listened to 50 thousand-watt voices from afar crackling through the speaker of the Bakelite radio in his room\, heard the beeping signal of Sputnik\, and became a ham operator (W6NFC). Following a career in broadcasting at WCCO\, KOVR\, KRON\, KABL\, and NPR\, and teaching broadcast journalism at San Francisco State\, he started a media production and consulting company that took him around the world for clients including the UN and American Express\, and to the real Borneo\, where he lay in a riverboat on the equator gazing at the stars of both hemispheres and musing about the mysteries of  earth. \nRuss’ groundbreaking web magazine\, https://connectedtraveler.com\, featured audio and video as early as 1994. It received coverage on CNN\, CBS\, the BBC\, Time\, USA Today\, The Wall Street Journal\, the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph. \nFor nine years\, Russ streamed Connected Traveler Radio\, a world culture and music radio station\, on his own invention\,  the World Vibrations Radio Station and Podcaster\, a VCR-sized device which was touted in numerous publications as a means to “democratize radio.” It was adopted by colleges\, school districts\, music producers and recommended by UNESCO for use in developing countries.” \nHe is author of the travel memoir “Tales of the Radio Traveler” and hosts the humor podcast “Gone Astray\,” with a book of the same name. \nhttps://russelljohnson.com \n \nRegister Here\n\n  \n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp
