SUMMARY:Irish American Writers and Artists at CHRS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column] [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]You are invited to join the Irish American Writers & Artists at CHRS for a special salon featuring film shorts\, poets\, and musicians.  Alameda Poet Laurette Kimi Sugioka\, Musicians Michele & George Huertes\, Deborah Crooks\, and Kwame Copeland. \nSalon will include film short by Alexander Adams and Kelly Candaele \nFilm Shorts: \nConfessions of a Well-Meaning Man–  Written\, directed\, produced\, and edited by three neighbors living int he same apartment complex.  Filmed on location at the California Historical Radio Society in a real old-fashioned radio studio\, the environment adds realism\, charm\, and humor becomes another character in the story.  The radio studio enhances the cinematic and darkly comedic monologue that tells the story of an Irish priest (played by a local Irish actor) live not he air during a hurricane.  Due to a broadcast regulation that states NO DEAD AIR ON THE RADIO\, our protagonist stumbles into serious subject matter: infidelity\, celibacy in the Catholic Church\, and serial murders.  Irish actor Alan Coyne who starred in this will be on hand for Q&A. \nSt. Kevin and the Blackbird at the Wilshire Grand– Workers building the Wilshire Grand high-rise in Los Angeles stop to read and mediate on Irish poet Seamus Heaney’s poem St. Kevin and the Blackbird. \nSuggested Donation $10-$20 \nFor more information contact host Lori Cassels- lcassels@aol.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Sound Bites- Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column] [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nWhat’s inside?  Radio Vs. iPhone \nIn May’s Sound Bites\, kids will become technology detectives as they explore what’s inside the devices we use to communicate. Participants will get a close look at a dissected vintage radio and a dissected iPhone\, comparing the parts and pieces that make each one work. \nThrough guided discussion and hands-on observation\, kids will learn how radios from the past used components like tubes\, coils\, and speakers to receive sound from the air\, while modern smartphones use tiny microchips\, circuit boards\, and digital technology to do the same things. \nThis fun activity helps kids see how communication technology has evolved over time while discovering the surprising similarities between old and new inventions. Designed for curious minds ages 5–15\, this Sound Bites event is perfect for anyone who wonders what’s inside and to learn how the technologies work! \nSound Bites is designed for kids and their grown-ups to enjoy together.  Please plan to stay and participate alongside your child during the event! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Sounds Bites- Radio Kits
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column] [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nGet ready to tune in and turn on your curiosity! In this month’s Sound Bites\, participants will build their very own working radio. \nWith guidance from our instructors\, kids will explore the basics of how radios work while assembling a hands-on kit they can take home. Along the way\, they’ll discover how invisible radio waves carry sound through the air and power the technology we use every day. \nThis is a guided\, start-to-finish activity\, perfect for curious minds who love to build\, tinker\, and learn by doing. By the end of the session\, each participant will have a functioning radio—and a deeper understanding of the science behind it. \nRecommended for ages 8 and up. \nA suggested donation of $20 helps cover the cost of materials. \nPlease note: Advance registration is required\, as kits are limited. Participants must arrive promptly at 10:00 AM and attend with a grown-up\, who should plan to stay and participate throughout the activity.
