SUMMARY:Cracking the Enigma: The Secret Battlefield of WW2
DESCRIPTION:Description of talk: \nWW1 was the first war to use radio\, which was an enormous advantage on the battlefield. But the weakness of existing manual ciphers meant every country now had their secret messages broken by the enemy! This vulnerability was the driving force for the invention of more advanced machine ciphers and was the beginning of crypto warfare. The Enigma machine was invented during this time and was the first cipher device to use electricity. So\, radio was directly responsible for the resulting explosion of crypto warfare\, which continues to this day. \n  \nThe Nazis used the Enigma in WW2 and had the utmost confidence in the secrecy of their messages\, despite evidence of enemy codebreaking. The story of Allied codebreaking during WW2 is a story of innovation\, intrigue\, and deception. The success of cracking the Enigma was kept secret for 41 years\, until 1974\, despite tens of thousands of people working on the effort in the UK and US. This secrecy is especially incredible for us living in the age of the internet\, WikiLeaks\, and Edward Snowden. Over 35\,000 Enigma machines were manufactured\, but only 400 exist today. \nRalph Simpson Bio: \nRalph Simpson worked in the computer industry for 32 years\, working for IBM and Cisco Systems. He started as a systems engineer for large mainframe computers and held a variety of technical and management roles\, including authoring an IBM Technical Manual on redundant systems.  He retired as Senior Director for Service Strategy at Cisco Systems\, with responsibility for 2\,500 engineers. \n  \nRalph is now retired and volunteers at History San Jose and the Computer History Museum. He wrote a book on cipher history called\, Crypto Wars: 2000 Years of Cipher Evolution. He is also an avid collector of cipher machines\, which you can see on his website\, CipherHistory.com.  \nAuthentic and working German Enigma machine from 1941 & Ralph Simpson in his “home museum” \n \nRSVP here!!\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

While still on active duty at NAS Alameda he started hanging out at radio stations including KJAZ.\nAfter his active duty\, Bill attended the adult Radio-TV Class at John A. O’Connell Vocational School in San Francisco. He became the Assistant Instructor until Proposition 13 eliminated adult programs.  He began working at KFOG as Engineering Manager in 1978. KFOG later added KNBR; and later more stations.  He also helped put KUSF on the air including assembling a composite 3 kW FM transmitter from parts.  Bill has always been interested in the history of radio. When recruited to join the KPH Project there was little arm-twisting involved because one of Bill’s high school friends worked there in the 70’s and they would hang out at the KPH receive site in Point Reyes.\nHe has been a member of the Maritime Radio Historical Society for almost 20 years which operates\, maintains\, and interprets historic Maritime Coastal Station KPH.  Today Bill still is active in broadcast radio\, radio communications\, and radio history.\nBill is a Fellow of the California Historical Radio Society in Preservation and inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. He is a member of CHRS\, IEEE\, SBE\, AES\, and AWA. He is the Chair of the Northern California Frequency Coordinating Committee. \nBill in front of the PW-15 Transmitter \n \n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Stan Bunger Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Radio Central\, 2152 Central Ave.\, Alameda\, CA 94501 on October 25\, 2024 from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM. \nMeet Stan Bunger and be the first to get a signed copy of his newly released book\, “Mornings with Madden.” \nMornings with Madden: My Radio Life with an American Legend- by Stan Bunger \nAn intimate and freewheeling portrait of John Madden through the NFL legend’s own words \nJohn Madden is synonymous with football. He was the television face and voice of the nation’s most popular sport\, the namesake of its best-selling sports video game\, and the man with the highest career winning percentage of any NFL coach. \nDespite his international fame\, there was a side of Madden known only to those who listened to morning radio broadcasts in the San Francisco Bay Area. That’s where Madden grew up\, lived\, and died. It’s where for decades he found joy in a daily chat with his hometown radio station: a chance to unwind\, tell stories\, and impart his own brand of wit and wisdom. \nIn Mornings With Madden\, Stan Bunger—the man most often on the other side of the mic—illuminates this larger-than-life figure\, drawing upon memories of more than fifteen years of daily broadcasts\, backed up by thousands of recordings of those conversations. Readers who adored Madden’s football acumen and quirky personality on NFL broadcasts will get to know the father\, husband\, bad golfer\, dog owner\, lover of roadside diners\, and philosopher whose personality dominated our radio chats. \nFeaturing moving reflections alongside Madden’s own words\, this is a treasure trove of wry observations\, self-deprecating humor\, clear-eyed thinking about sports and society\, and the “Maddenisms” that endeared the legendary coach to millions. \nJoin CHRS welcoming Stan on October 25 from 6-8 PM.  This event is free to the public\, but please RSVP here so we will have enough books available for those who wish to purchase a copy. \n  \n  \n \n\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:Women in Broadcasting Event- "He Said\, She Said: Reality Check"
DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame commemorates Women’s History Month with our second annual women’s program titled\, “He Said\, She Said: Reality Check.” This year’s event will be held Saturday\, March 15th at 11am at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant at Jack London Square in Oakland.\n\n\nHow have women changed the face of broadcasting? How have they navigated a male dominated field in which they had little power and influence and few\, if any\, advocates.  How have women elevated their own progress in radio and TV? Which visionary managers championed women in those early years? And what are the experiences and challenges that women broadcasters face today?\n\n\nOur panel includes Marcia Brandwynne\, who has the distinction of being the first woman to anchor a local TV prime time newscast at KTVU Channel 2 in 1972. Marcia will be joined by decades-long ABC President and General Manager of KGO Radio Newstalk 810\, Mickey Luckoff and current top-rated broadcaster\, martial artist and cancer survivor Freska (Griarte) of KOIT and KBLX. Our host for the program is longtime TV and radio weather forecaster Roberta Gonzales of KTVU Fox 2 and formerly of KPIX-TV (Channel  5) and KCBS Radio.\n\n\nJoin us Saturday\, March 15th for heavy hors d’oeuvres and no-host bar at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant at Jack London Square in Oakland. Mingling and food service begin at 11am. The one-hour program starts at 12pm. Underground parking is available at Jack London Square. The ferry dock is a short walk.\n\n\n\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp
