SUMMARY:Origins of Silicon Valley: Roots in Ham Radio
DESCRIPTION:Join CHRS and Paul Wesling on 2/23/24 for an informative evening on the Origins of Silicon Valley.  Doors open at 6:00 for socializing and hors d’oeuvres.  From 6:45-7:45 we will hear from Paul\, and then have Q&A from 7:45-8:00.  Don’t forget to RSVP at the bottom! \nSummary: Why did Silicon Valley come into being?  The story goes back to local Hams (amateur radio operators) trying to break RCA’s tube patents\, “angel” investors\, the sinking of the Titanic\, Fred Terman and Stanford University\, local invention of high-power tubes\, WW II and radar\, William Shockley’s mother living in Palo Alto\, and the SF Bay Area infrastructure that developed – these factors pretty much determined that the semiconductor and IC industries would be located in California’s Santa Clara Valley\, and that the Valley would remain the world’s innovation center as new technologies emerged – computers\, then software\, mobile\, biotech\, Big Data\, VR/AR\, autonomous vehicles\, blockchain\, and now generative AI – and it would become the model for innovation worldwide. \nPaul Wesling\, an IEEE Life Fellow and Distinguished Lecturer\, has observed the Valley for decades as an engineer\, executive\, resident\, and educator\, and has presented this talk world-wide.  In this non-technical presentation\, he gives an exciting and colorful history of device technology development and innovation that began in Palo Alto\, then spread across the Santa Clara Valley during and following World War II.  You’ll meet some of the colorful characters – Cyril Elwell\, Leonard Fuller\, Lee de Forest\, Bill Eitel W6UF\, Charles Litton 6AO\, Fred Terman 6AE/W6DI\, David Packard 9DRV\, Bill Hewlett\, Russ Varian and others – extending to Nolan Bushnell W7DUK and Steve Wozniak WA6BND (pictured below with Paul)– who came to define the worldwide electronics industries through their inventions and process development. \n \nPaul (KM6LH) received degrees in electrical engineering and materials science from Stanford University\, then worked locally at companies including Lenkurt Electric\, Sperry-Univac\, and Amdahl\, joining Tandem Computers in Cupertino in 1985.  Paul retired from HP in 2001\, then served as “Mr. IEEE” for the San Francisco Bay Area for 10 years.  He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.  He received the IEEE’s Centennial Medal\, the Board’s Distinguished Service award\, the Society Contribution Award\, the IEEE’s Third Millennium Medal\, and the EPS Society’s Presidential Recognition Award.  He edits the IEEE/ASME/SEMI Heterogeneous Integration Roadmap for prediction of technology directions in electronics packaging. \nRSVP Here: https://forms.gle/hbNDhyLgbLx7u2Cc7\nIf you have any trouble with the RSVP\, please send an email to rachel@chrsradio.org \n  \nIf you cannot attend\, but would like to view this CHRS talk “live” over Zoom\, please RSVP here (to get the Zoom link a day or two before the talk):  https://rebrand.ly/4fpqqbd \n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:The Early History of College Radio with Jennifer Waits
DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting Jennifer Waits of Radio Survivor to speak to the CHRS membership about The Early History of College Radio.\nTitle: “Sleuthing out the Early Days of College Radio and Preserving this Important History” \nJennifer Waits\nCo-founder Radio Survivor\nAssistant Curator\, Digital Library of Amateur Radio and Communications\nCo-chair\, College\, Community and Educational Radio Caucus on the Library of Congress’ Radio Preservation Task Force \nSummary:\nEver since radio’s early experimental days\, there have been college students broadcasting from their campuses\, often at the technological forefront of radio. Despite lack of funding\, a transient student population\, and competing academic demands\, passionate radio enthusiasts have persevered and created radio stations in myriad forms using amateur radio\, AM\, FM\, carrier current\, public address systems\, cable\, telephones\, the Internet\, and so much more. \nJennifer Waits has been researching the early history of college radio for many years and also obsessively tours radio stations (posting field trip reports for 173 so far). She started blogging about college radio in 2008 on her site\, Spinning Indie\, and in 2009 helped to launch Radio Survivor\, where much of her work appears today. \nInspired by the rich radio history at her alma mater\, Haverford College (where students launched AM station WABQ in 1923) she has been working to tell the story of the important work done by students at student-run college radio stations. \nAt CHRS she will share some of her recent research about the connections between amateur radio and early student-led college radio stations. Key to the story are student radio enthusiasts at a number of schools\, including Union College and Haverford College in the 1920s. Additionally\, she will dig into the legacy of these early efforts and explain how student radio transformed and grew beginning in the 1940s. Jennifer will also talk about her work to help preserve college radio history and the ways that stations\, alumni\, and radio fans can help.\n\nJennifer Waits is an independent scholar\, DJ at KFJC\, volunteer\, writer\, and co-founder of Radio Survivor\, a website\, podcast and syndicated radio show devoted to radio and audio culture. She has a Master’s degree in Popular Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University\, where she did her thesis on MTV’s “The Real World.” Her writing about radio and sound can be found in Radio World\, Radio Journal\, Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture\, and Hii Magazine. She’s also a member of the Library of Congress’ Radio Preservation Task Force\, for which she co-chairs a caucus focused on college and community radio. Jennifer loves visiting radio stations and has chronicled her trips to 173 radio stations and counting.\n\nRSVP to attend this event: https://forms.gle/zxV7MpA2RYzeHMmf8 \n  \nIf you have any difficulty with the RSVP link please send an email to rachel@chrsradio.org \n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:CHRS Antique TV Event
DESCRIPTION:CHRS Annual TV Event is scheduled as follows:\n\nDate:  Saturday\, May 18\, 2024\n \nTime:  9:30 AM – 4:30 PM\n \nPlace:  CHRS “Radio Central” 2152 Central Avenue\, Alameda\, CA\n\nAdmission is free; lunch will be provided for a modest price.\n\nPresentations and demos really make the day special\, so please step up and make a presentation or prepare a demo if you’ve got some ideas.  We’re a friendly audience eager to learn what you find interesting about the history of TV.  Although the majority of our presentations and demos over the years have been technical\, we like to have other kinds of topics as well — stories about manufacturers or the industry in general\, stories about networks\, working in broadcasting\, or any kind of related history.  Tell us what you like to collect and why.  Or enlighten us with some history about TV shows\, events\, or milestones.  Last year’s lineup of presentations was fantastic — let’s see if we can do the same this year.\n\nTechnical demos have been some of the most memorable parts of the event in past years.  If you’ve been working on something special you’d like to show\, we’re eager to see it.\n\nWe’ll also have some space for you to display any special sets you would like to bring along.  They can be working (we can provide a video feed for working sets) or non-working.\n\nSo mark your calendars and plan to be there on May 18.\n \nLet me know if you plan to attend.  If you would like to make a presentation\, do a demonstration\, or show some sets\, let me know so I can begin preparing the day’s schedule.\n\nFeel free to invite others you think may be interested.  We’ve grown beyond the Bay Area\, and are open to anyone who is interested in traveling to join us.  Due to many of your efforts\, CHRS has become a major player in the pursuit of TV history and preservation and restoration of early TV equipment.  As we continue to gain traction and recognition\, it’s natural that our attendance will grow beyond our own neighborhood.\n\nLooking forward to seeing many of you again\,\n\nTom Albrecht\nctalbrecht@yahoo.com\nCHRS member\nSan Jose\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:3:29 Saturday Music Experience with Keith Scott
DESCRIPTION:Ever since the beginning of (my) time music has been present. Starting with the kitchen AM radio and then branching into the world of FM and high-end audio systems.  I knew the sound was better and I loved to watch the needles of the VU meters bounce around.  Add several family friends who were piano players (2 were professionals and made money).  Thanks to the Internet I’m on a mission to discover amazing music and associated videos.  No specific category\, and no limits as long as it’s beyond the norm.  Some go back over 90 years and some less than a decade. \nEnd the day with 30 minutes of high fidelity with a bit of commentary (not much I promise). \nLeave CHRS with a friendly earworm tickling your brain cells and a smile on your face. \n\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp

SUMMARY:SFAF presents Introduction to DIY
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT: You will need to register for this event by May 22\, 2024 as we’ll need to ship the PCB board and electronics to you. Plus\, you’ll need your own soldering station and basic multimeter. \nIntroduction to DIY – safety considerations\, basic electronic parts\, soldering techniques\, using a multimeter\, signal generator\, basic scope. \nDescription:\n\nThis is an introductory class for those who want to build and experiment with electronic equipment.First you will learn how to identify parts and solder them on a printed circuit board (PCB).\n\nIn the supervised soldering practice you will build a kit of a moving-magnet (MM) phono pre-amplifier. \nSoldering alone is not enough\, because sometimes you encounter problems with your project.\nFor that reason\, you will also learn how to use basic test equipment. \nYou will learn how to use a multimeter to measure voltages and calculate current using Ohm’s Law.\nYou will also learn how to use low-cost signal generator and oscilloscope to test audio circuits. \nWe will hold two additional online Zoom meetings as part of this class. \nZoom meeting#1\nTime: Wednesday 5/29/2024 6-8pm\nTopics: 20m Ohm’s Law\n20m AC vs DC in audio circuits\n20m identifying electronic parts\n20m using a multimeter\n10m using a signal generator\n30m using a basic oscilloscope (scope)\nWe will have a brief summary of these topics in the class on 6/2 but will not have time for a deep dive.\nAll registered students are expected to attend this Zoom meeting#1.\nIf you don’t attend this online class then you’ll be expected to study this material on your own! \nZoom meeting#2\nTime: Wednesday 6/19/2024 6-8pm\nTopics: completing your phono kit.\nInstructions how to complete the kit will be given at the class and assistance will be available on a discussion forum. \nThis meeting gives you an opportunity to diagnose issues with your kit using your camera and a multimeter. \nWe will demonstrate to students that own a signal generator and scope how to use them for advanced diagnostics. \nZoom meeting links will be included in your event registration confirmation email. \nFees for this class are $70 for members and $80 for non-members which includes shipping costs\, the PCB boards and electronics needed to complete the phono stage – really a bargain! Students will need their own soldering station and multimeter. \nClass size is limited\, so don’t wait to register for this great class!\n\nRegister Now\n\nIMPORTANT: You will need to register for this event by May 22\, 2024 as we’ll need to ship the PCB board and electronics to you.
