A graduate of St John’s College\, Cambridge with a degree in history\, he went on to build a career spanning radio\, mobile communications\, telecommunications technology\, and the modern satellite industry. He has authored and co-authored numerous books on radio and telecommunications and has spent decades explaining how technological innovation becomes the communications infrastructure we rely on every day. \nHis interests also extend deeply into wireless history and preservation. A past Director of Cambridge Wireless and supporter of museum and archival work\, Varrall is involved in initiatives documenting the people\, technology\, and engineering that shaped wireless communications. \nThis presentation will connect the history CHRS preserves with the communications technologies developing today—showing the remarkable technological path from Marconi’s pioneering wireless experiments to an interconnected world of fiber\, mobile networks\, satellites\, and space-based communications. \nWhether you’re interested in radio history\, telecommunications\, engineering\, or simply how we got from wireless telegraphy to today’s connected world\, this promises to be an engaging look at the past\, present\, and future of communications. \nYou will have an opportunity to purchase The Telecoms Coast at the event.  Royalties from the sale of The Telecoms Coast go towards youth engagement at the Marconi Centre Poldhu.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp URL:https://californiahistoricalradio.com/event/from-marconi-to-satellites/ LOCATION:CHRS Radio Central\, 2152 Central Avenue\, Alameda\, 94501\, United States ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://californiahistoricalradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/CHRS_TunedInTalks_social_1080X1080_R2-scaled.png ORGANIZER;CN="Rachel Lee":MAILTO:rachel@chrsradio.org GEO:37.766088;-122.248117 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=CHRS Radio Central 2152 Central Avenue Alameda 94501 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=2152 Central Avenue:geo:-122.248117,37.766088 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20270424T150000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20270424T170000 DTSTAMP:20261005T191619Z CREATED:20260526T235551Z LAST-MODIFIED:20261005T191619Z UID:10001243-1808578800-1808586000@californiahistoricalradio.com SUMMARY:Girl Scouts Junior Craft and Tinker Badge Workshop DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1781637348426{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]\nEarn your Junior Craft and Tinker Badge at CHRS!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Juniors will build their very own working radio while exploring how radio waves carry sound through the air and power the technology we use every day.
