Ask Dr. Hip

March 14 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us at CHRS for a conversation with Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld, better known to generations of Bay Area listeners as Dr. Hip of KSAN-FM.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Hip became a defining voice of San Francisco’s underground radio scene, offering candid, controversial, and often provocative advice on topics rarely discussed openly on the air—health, sex, drugs, and personal freedom. His broadcasts on KSAN challenged social norms and reflected the era’s spirit of curiosity, experimentation, and change.

A practicing psychiatrist specializing in psychopharmacology, Dr. Schoenfeld’s professional work focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use, abuse, and addiction. His unique blend of medical expertise and countercultural sensibility made him a trusted—and sometimes notorious—source of information during a transformative moment in media and social history.

From 1967–1973 and again in 1978–1979, he also wrote Hip Pocrates, a nationally syndicated newspaper column that answered readers’ questions about sexuality and psychoactive drugs with the same frankness that defined his radio presence.

This special event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from a figure who helped shape free-form radio and the cultural conversation of a generation.
