The California Historical Radio Society: Preserving the Legacy of Broadcasting

The California Historical Radio Society (CHRS) is a beacon of dedication to preserving and celebrating electronic communication. Founded in 1974, CHRS is a hub for enthusiasts, historians, and collectors, fostering a deep appreciation for the role radio, television, and related technologies have played in shaping modern communication.

History

Originally, CHRS collectors met in parking lots and had swap meets exchanging parts, radios, information, and ideas. Since then, CHRS has been acquiring, restoring, and showcasing vintage radios, broadcasting equipment, television, and related artifacts. The society operates its Radio Museum in Alameda, California, where visitors can explore a collection of restored radios, broadcasting artifacts, historical documents, televisions, and interactive exhibits. The museum is a space for education and discovery, offering a glimpse into the golden age of radio and electronic communication, both domestically and globally.

Events

CHRS hosts events throughout the year. One of its signature events, Radio Day by the Bay, features live auctions, classic radio performances, and community gatherings. This event not only raises vital funds for CHRS but also brings together the community and radio enthusiasts in a celebration of history and innovation.

Each month CHRS plans an educational event, either a speaker event, or a larger broadcasting event.  These are open to the public and participated in by industry professionals and the community alike.  Additionally, we offer radio repair workshops and this summer our first youth camps in addition to hosting regular tours and field trips.  Finally, in homage to our beginnings we offer parking lot swap meets and electronics sales as well as participating in Antiques Faires.

Current Initiatives

CHRS is in the midst of a campaign to transform its great room into a state-of-the-art museum. The initial campaign will support the planning and design phase, contributing to a goal to fund the installation of professional exhibits, multimedia features, and an expanded digital platform. This will enhance the visitor experience and establish CHRS as a premier destination for exploring electronic communication. californiahistoricalradio.com/support/capital-campaign/
